A City in Mourning

Most everyone associated with the city of Pittsburgh recognizes that today is "black Monday" in Pittsburgh. To the profound disappointment of "the Steeler Nation" the black and gold suffered a rather stunning defeat at the hands of the Denver Broncos, despite being highly favored to win.

There are scores of reasons given for the loss, and not a few folks who attribute the win to Tim Tebow and his rather incredible string of 4th quarter victories marked by his now nationally identifiable "tebowing" at the end of the game.

For those of us here in Pittsburgh it means the end of another good season, but not a great one. It's the first time that we've been knocked out of the playoffs in the first round in many years and it also represents a very significant "changing of the guard" for the future team in all likelihood.

This is where perspective becomes very important. As with all good Steeler fans, I'm disappointed but clearly recognize that it's a game that we lost in a season that's come to an end. The important things in my life are still in place and the real significant objectives and goals that I've laid out for the year are still very much in their infancy. It helps when you have something in life to cheer about beyond your sports teams.

And so, if you happen to be in mourning for the Steelers I suppose that's fine for a day or two, but I encourage you to go on with life and find another place to invest that amount of emotional energy.

Thanks to the Steelers for giving us something to look forward to every year and for making us proud for yet another reason to be a "Pittsburgher"!

Blessings,
Dr. Jay

  1. My condolences, old friend. We here in Denver are, of course, "A City in Celebration". And, even more than the win last Sunday, the Christians here are celebrating the Godly example that Tim Tebow is setting. Here's what ran in the Denver Post today...

"An hour after the game, Tebow celebrated with his family and friends outside the Broncos’ locker room. Among that group was a teenage girl named Bailey Knaub, who was a special guest of Tebow’s as part of his foundation. She’s had 73 surgeries for a rare condition called Wegener’s Granulomatosis that grows tumors in vital organs.

“I’ve followed Tim since he was in college,’’ Bailey said last night. “He’s always been so inspiring and we connected right away. He was everything I could have hoped for and more. It was an amazing once-in-a-lifetime experience.’’

Tebow sincerely sounded as excited to be her host as he was euphoric about the improbable upset he had just engineered out on the field.

“I’m just very thankful for the platform that God has given me . . . because I have the opportunity to affect people,’’ Tebow said. “Football is amazing, but the real win is being able to comfort a girl who’s gone through 73 surgeries and get a chance to hang out with her. That’s the biggest win of the day. That’s what I’m even more proud of.’’

Cynics might scoff at such a notion, Tebow feeling more gratified about being host to that young girl in need than authoring one of the most memorable victories in Broncos history.

That’s what makes him such a complicated and confounding figure — one we cannot take our eyes off of."

Now, that's worth celebrating no matter where you live!
