Setting Markers

Here in the area in which our primary church offices are, there is an amazing amount of construction work going on that greatly impedes traffic and can create unexpected delays at any time of day or night.

It’s interesting to hear the responses of people as they encounter these delays and how they “really feel about it.” The one thing that seems to lift people’s spirits is to know that there is a specific deadline that all the construction operators are aiming for. When people know that a time has been set to accomplish a specific goal, they’re more likely to put up with a temporary inconvenience.

Just today, I heard someone say in a local Starbucks, that “yeah, in just 4 months this part of the project will be over and life will get back to normal.” 4 months can seem like a long time, but after 8 months of a really difficult period it doesn’t seem that far away.

It’s the same with any project, whether it’s a mission challenge, a church plant, a discipleship commitment or any thing that require some discipline. Most of us are oriented to try to achieve but even huge goals seem much more reachable if they’re broken into smaller, more reasonable segments.

Set some markers out there and as you reach those intermittent goals, let it reassure you that you will make it and, in the end, the time will go faster and be less onerous. Give that some thought and see where it applies in your life today!

Blessings,

Pastor Jay
