This past weekend Dr. Kevin Leman talked about the simple truth that rules without relationships equal rebellion (see the full message here http://www.northway.org/secondary/mediaArchive/mediaArchive.aspx )
The reality is that we need some rules in life and in any organization in order to function with a sense of focus and clarity. However, invariably it's the relationships that dictate what will be the nature of the outcome.
Seeking to impose a set of directions or guidelines upon people simply doesn't work over the long haul. Surely in certain in short term situations those kind of things are necessary. However, over the long term, it's relationships built on trust and a sense of confidence in the integrity of the person that you're dealing with that will carry the day.
Just today I had that kind of situation with two brothers that feel passionately about a particular area of ministry that is needed in our church. The guidelines we'd set out were certainly credible, but discernment seemed to indicate that the timing just wasn't right for us. I value the fact that in our relationship we were able to talk through our differences of opinion and still come out with a sense that we will hear from the Lord together and move ahead according to His will and purpose for us.
I hope you have those kinds of trustworthy relationships in your life and are not bound by a legalistic, rule-driven environment. It's not how God intended for us to live in community and certainly is not His best whether it's in your family, your church, your place of business or any other network of significant relationships.
Blessings!
Dr. Jay
