One of the most well beloved Christmas songs of all time is "I'll be Home for Christmas."
There are scores of arrangements and perhaps hundreds of recorded versions of this tune that was written in 1943 specifically to touch the hearts of families who had loved ones in the service of their country during World War II.
For whatever reason, those same simple words ring true to us today whether our loved one is in the military service or simply living in another part of the country or the world.
The deep and perhaps hidden meaning of this song (whether intended or not) is that Christmas is all about God making a way for us to be "home" with Him through His Son Jesus. Christmas is a time that we recognize that it was only because God chose to make a way by sending His Son to be our Redeemer that we have the hope of the possibility of being "eternally home" with our heavenly Father.
On the other hand, just the simple interpretation of this song brings comfort to those of us who have loved ones or family members who we long to see, especially at Christmas time.
I know this is true for our family as it has been a couple years since we spent Christmas together and I'm certain it's true for many of you who will be reading this piece as well. My prayer for you is that the Lord will fufill your deep desires to be one, to be a family, to be together this Christmas and if not in a physical sense, then certainly in the reality of spiritual oneness which only He can bring.
I'll be home for Christmas gives us all hope that one day this will be true and now, perhaps, if only in our dreams.
Blessings!
Dr. Jay
