Compassion Expressed

It’s been a couple of weeks since I mentioned in this space that our 8-½ yr. old chocolate lab named Tucker took his last breath. It was premature, sudden and pretty sad for all of us who’ve grown so accustomed to this loving creature.

What’s been quite surprising to me over the past weeks is the outpouring of comfort, consolation and encouragement from scores of people that I rarely hear from. They’ve been folks from inside the North Way family and others from the community in general, but they’ve all shared their story of their own emotional heartache at the time of the loss of their beloved dog (and in some case cats!).

What’s surprising to me is that people who I have not heard from in months or years made an effort to reach out to me at a time of loss in a very sincere and genuine way that really touched me. It’s made me realize that the bonds of loss sometimes can transcend the long passage of time or even the moments of joy that might have been shared. Loss has a greater identification than gain and when it’s expressed in terms of sharing sorrow it’s indeed, very comforting. Perhaps there’s someone in your life that needs to hear from you today. It’s worth the effort.

Blessings,Dr. Jay
