If one ever doubted how "hungry" parents are for some kind of help in facing the challenge of raising their kids, all they needed to do was to take one look at the crowd that gathered Sunday night.
On a very bad weather night with multiple power outages, a nationally televised Steelers game beginning just when the session was to end, parents from all over the area jammed our auditorium to hear my friend, Dr.Kevin Leman, share the major points from his best-selling new book: "Have a New Kid by Friday!".
What is very clear to me is that parenting hasn't gotten any easier over the past years despite the "glut" of resources available to any one who really wants them. In fact, some of the circumstances and situations seemed more complex and difficult than what I remembered as a parent; in part because of increased permissiveness and in part because of "absentee" parents.
The good news in this evening was that Dr.K gave the large audience a pretty clear, but achievable challenge in how to correct even the most difficult of behaviors. The only question that remains is this: "Do parents have the guts to implement the wise counsel?"
I was so encouraged to see the folks that came out last night. My prayer is that they will now begin to take their rightful place as "authoritative" parents so that they kids can flourish in this tough world.
Blessings,
Dr.Jay
