In a few short paragraphs, I won't pretend to try to explain the "mystery" of God
in natural disasters. However, the sheer scope of suffering and unfolding magnitude of the recent earthquake/tsunami beg for some kind of response.
"The earth is the Lord's 'footstool'" the Psalmist says and therefore we know through this and scores of other scriptures that God is in control of "nature"; not
"mother".
However, He does not 'target' some for massive destruction and others for unending bliss. It's all part of the 'creation' that is groaning for redemption that will eliminate such catastrophes in the future (Romans 8:22).
In the meantime this event should ellicit from us a heart of thankful praise for the 'keeping grace' that has been shown to most of us for most of our lives; and
second, a willingness to do something to demonstrate that we care (through prayer, giving, supporting relief etc.)
Never allow yourself to believe that God is removed from such suffering. On the cross, He demonstrated to the watching world that even He was not exempt from unspeakable acts. In the end, He showed that even those things can be redemptive for humanity.
