One of the things that has been essential to maintaining my course through the various challenges and storms of life and ministry has been a very strong foundation that was laid by my early mentors and their passion for the scripture.
By no means am I pretending to be a biblical scholar but I will say that endless hours in the scriptures under the watchful oversight of someone who really cared about me understanding "sound doctrine" according to 2 Timothy 2:2 was a very important part of what shaped my life.
In the barrage of opportunities we have right now for information and all kinds of competing doctrines, philosophies of ministy, strategies, etc., it's essential that one lays a strong foundation as early as possible in your walk with Christ.
Don't be deceived into thinking that casual reading of the Word is the same as truly assimilating the foundational truths, doctrines and core values of what the Word teaches. This requires a discipline and a measure of study that all of us are capable of, but not that may of us take the time to do.
I say this to encourage you, not at all to create some sort of burdensome obstacle. In fact, sound doctrine becomes a joy when you find yourself standing through the storms when others around you seem to be slipping away.
May you be blessed in your search today!
Dr. Jay
